Marito's Story

My sweet boy, Marito, is almost 11 years old. He was diagnosed at 2.8 years old, and started treatment at 3.10 years old. We are from Sonora, Mexico. Marito is so kind and a smart child, he is already used to being pricked weekly for his infusion and he requests his medication 1 or 2 days before, I can't understand if it is because he feels he needs it or if it's just out of habit. He is currently in the fourth year of elementary school and is at the same level as his classmates in learning. He is a very sociable and affectionate child, he likes to make jokes and he is actually a very happy child, but like any child involved in hospitals, there is medical trauma and he resists attending medical appointments because of the long waits, having to take him out of school to attend his checkups and because it's obviously not his happy zone...

He really loves to play Nintendo, Mario Bros and Minecraft, and also play basketball with some limits but he enjoy it, he is always in a good mood, positive and innocent. As a mom, I am worried about bullying but until now it has not happened, we are in the right place.

Over time and with therapies, Marito improved his walking gait, his balance, and his language, he learned more and more words and his dream is to become a YouTuber, he loved visiting Disneyland and above all the adrenaline, he really enjoyed walking through the parks, and also the mario bros world, he relives the trip watching all the photos and videos on my cell phone so excited over and over again.

The difficult part is that in Mexico we have a poor health system and we need to be more open to our patients and try to improve care both with the medical part and with less expensive therapies, a more humanized and specialized treatment for a disease like this. At least we have elaprase...
