VC Star: Takeda Pharmaceutical unveils $170M expansion in Thousand Oaks

Project Alive was honored to participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Takeda Pharmaceutical’s $170 million expansion at their Thousand Oaks site, supporting production of their Hunter syndrome treatment. This milestone reflects Takeda’s continued investment and commitment to the Hunter syndrome community, and we are proud to call them a valued partner in our shared mission to create a better world for those impacted by this rare disease.

Our President & Executive Director, Kristin McKay, was invited to address the crowd of attendees, which included Takeda employees, Thousand Oaks Mayor David Newman, Ventura County Supervisor Jeff Gorell, Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin, Associate Deputy Director for Industry Engagement and Development Maria Onorato, and the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles, Naolo Kamitan. Together, we celebrated innovation, collaboration, and dedication to advancing healthcare for rare diseases.

Later, Miriam Pedroza, mother to Adam who is living with Hunter syndrome, spoke during Takeda’s internal staff meeting. Adam joined the celebration too—sharing games of basketball with employees who embraced Takeda’s motto, “every vial has a name.” Stories like Miriam’s remind us why continued investment, research, and collaboration are essential.
