Michael's Story

Michael was diagnosed with Hunter syndrome (MPS II) when he was four and a half years old,
but Hunter syndrome was never what defined him.

Michael loved Toy Story, music, pizza, and black beans. He had a strong sense of justice, and
one of his favorite scenes in Toy Story was when the toys finally turned on Sid. He loved seeing
the good guys win.

His favorite song was Bill Withers’ “Lovely Day,” which couldn't have been more
fitting—because Michael really was a lovely day.

He was also a master at hiding things. Spoons, cups, sticks, toys, phones—you never knew
what might disappear or where Michael might have tucked it away. Even after he was gone, we
continued finding things he had hidden around our home. Those discoveries became little
reminders of him, still waiting for us in unexpected places.

And Michael gave the absolute best hugs.

Throughout his life, Hunter syndrome brought appointments, therapies, procedures, weekly
infusions, and increasing challenges as the disease progressed. But those things tell only a
small part of Michael's story.

Michael was our son. He was a brother. He was funny, loving, mischievous, and deeply loved.
He filled our home with music, missing spoons, Toy Story, and the kind of hugs we would give
anything to feel one more time.

Michael was also part of a big, beautifully blended family. Michael had many people who called
him their son, brother, and family—and there was never a shortage of people who loved him.

Michael died in 2023 at the age of 15.

We are grateful that Project Alive is honoring Michael and giving others the opportunity to know
the boy behind his name.

If you happen to hear “Lovely Day,” we hope you'll think of him.
Because Michael really was one.

Forever 15. Forever loved. Forever Michael.

We continue to share Michael's story and advocate for children and families affected by Hunter syndrome because we want the boys who come after him to have what Michael deserved, too—more time.
