What is Hunter Syndrome?

Hunter syndrome is a rare genetic disease that is progressively debilitating, life-limiting and without a cure. It occurs almost exclusively in males and currently affects approximately 500 boys in the U.S. and less than 2,000 worldwide. Individuals with Hunter syndrome have a defect in the gene that normally causes the body to make the enzyme iduronate-2-sulfatase (I2S) which is responsible for the breakdown of cellular waste called glycosaminoglycans or GAGs. Without that necessary enzyme, the accumulation of these GAGs leads to progressive damage throughout the entire body.

Project Alive

Project Alive exists to find a cure for Hunter syndrome through research and advocacy, and provide education and resources to the Hunter syndrome community.

Project Alive is a powerful voice for children and adults with Hunter syndrome, bringing together families and advocates with researchers, industry, and regulators. The organization funds promising research, assists researchers and industry with designing research studies for our community, and advocates for the most effective and efficient system of clinical research, evaluation, and approval. through its innovative campaigns and grassroots efforts, Project Alive has made significant advances in public awareness about Hunter syndrome and its symptoms, the need for early diagnosis, and available treatments and clinical trials.

Over the years, the Hunter Syndrome Foundation has hosted a fun, awareness driven event called Dancing with Dominic in Prosper, TX. The community has come to adore this event and many look forward to it each year. The Hunter Syndrome Foundation is excited to partner with Project Alive this year to expand Dancing with Dominic by co-hosting the WonderFall Family Festival and bring Hunter syndrome families in from across the country.
